History

In 1941 Prof. Dr. R. Heiss founded the Institute of Food Research with the core topic of "Haltbar verpackte Lebensmittel" meaning safe and shelfstable packed food. This was the starting point of an ongoing trustful co-operation between industry (IVLV), science and government. In the seventies Prof. Dr. Heiss handed over the institute to the Fraunhofer Organisation, one well known applied research partner of the industry.

The food and packaging industry was and still is often organised in small or medium sized companies. But concentration has developed larger entities up to global players as well. In the fifties this started already in the chemical industry. Therefore these larger or global players supported the research in addition with further financial support trough being a member in the FoGe, founded for that reason in 1964.

The FoGe financed the building of the Institute of Food Research in Munich, Schragenhofstrasse 35. This building was later the home of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (Fraunhofer IVV) until 1996, when the institute moved into larger buildings in Freising near Munich. Today the building is fully rented to different parties creating an income we spend for funding research projects. The offices of IVLV and FoGe are located there too.
